The Appointed IEBC Selection Panel Being Paid Without Doing Their Job
Next week, civil society groups will sue the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel for failing to form a formidable electoral agency.
They claim that the Nelson Makanda-led committee has been squandering public funds for more than six months since the court approved it to begin the process.
They, led by the Uchaguzi Platform and the Elections Observation Group (ELOG), claim that the lack of a properly constituted electoral body has left the country in limbo, while the Selection Panel remains undecided.
ELOG chief Musau Mulee warned that the country is on the verge of a representation crisis, citing the Banisa Constituency, which lost MP Maalim Kullow in March last year and is still unrepresented in Parliament.
At the same event, the consortium, through their legal consultant Steve Ogolla, poked holes in the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which is already before Parliament, claiming that it contains numerous constitutional gaps that must be bridged if the report is to be implemented.
They allayed concerns that some of the proposals in the nine Bills were unrealistic and unconstitutional, and were intended to settle political scores rather than reform the governance architecture.
They are currently considering challenging the recommendations in court before they are implemented, through their lawyer Ogolla.
This comes as opposition leaders have accused the Executive of delaying the implementation of the nine bills.
