Gachagua’s Wife Attends the African Widows Summit in Zanzibar

Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the Deputy President’s spouse, will speak at the African Widows Summit on June 20, 2024, in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

President of Zanzibar Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, First Lady of Zanzibar Mariam Mwinyi, Zimbabwe First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, Former Tanzania First Lady Mama Anne Mkapa, and Former First Lady of Sierra Leone Isatu Jabbie Kabba will all attend the “Women in Widowhood: Reforming the African Space” Summit.

Notable guests expected include Ambassadors, Ministers, the President of the Union of African Widows Hope Nwakwesi, UN Women representatives, African Union representatives, other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and widows from all over Africa, among others.

The Summit aims to address various issues affecting widows and promote structural changes in the way governments operate.

It also aims to direct widows away from charity programs and toward structural changes in African governments that will improve widows’ lives.

Pastor Dorcas has been an advocate for widows since her university days, and she has carried this passion into the office of the Spouse of the Deputy President (OSDP) under the Widows and Orphans Pillar.

She runs widows programs through the OSDP in Nairobi, Kajiado, Migori, Laikipia, Kakamega, Bungoma, TransNzoia, Nandi, Bomet, Kilifi, and Nakuru counties.

Economic empowerment projects include fish farming, tree nursery establishment, goat keeping, beekeeping, beadwork, agribusiness, dress and knitting, soap and detergent production, and candle manufacturing.

Another close opportunity for Pastor Dorcas is to provide psychosocial and spiritual support to thousands of widows.

Her office’s other pillars are Boy Child and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), which are built on chaplaincy, outreach, and family values.
