Gov’t Wants To Permanently Close Local University Over Pollution

The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has threatened to close a local university in Kajiado County due to pollution allegations.

Salome Machua, Deputy Director of Enforcement at the university, stated on Thursday that if raw waste was not addressed, the institution would be forced to close.

Salome stated that the university had previously been warned about complaints about wastewater discharge, but had failed to address the leaks.

NEMA reported that university waste had leaked into open areas, resulting in hazardous ponds that posed a risk to local residents.

“So this morning we are at this University. We were here a week ago following some complaints that there’s efferent discharge from their efferent plant and we gave some conditions to be observed.

“That treatment plan should be looked into so that they stop releasing waste to the environment,” stated  Machua.

The university’s failure to comply with regulations has resulted in its imminent closure.

Additionally, NEMA has threatened to close several slaughterhouses in the area due to improper waste disposal practices.

The Authority stated that the current waste disposal methods at these abattoirs are hazardous and do not meet the necessary standards.

This crackdown highlights NEMA’s ongoing efforts to ensure proper waste management in various institutions.

Earlier this year, in January, NEMA targeted 29 companies in Nairobi for allegedly polluting the Nairobi River.

In response, these companies were directed to clean up the river within 30 days of receiving the notice.
