Rules For Protesters and Kenya Police Ahead of Tuesday’s Demonstrations

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki explained on Monday that all protestors must follow the rules set out for tomorrow’s anti-finance bill protests.

During a press briefing, Kindiki stated unequivocally that no protestor will be permitted to vandalize or destroy any property, public or private.

“The protestors must remain peaceful and unarmed throughout the assembly and demonstration,” he added.

He also stated that the constitutional right to picket did not permit the destruction of property.

In addition, he stated that the protestors were denied access to certain areas that are protected for national security reasons.

Protesters are barred from entering critical areas for the provision of water, power, and other social services. Furthermore, they should not interfere with public activities.

“They must not interfere with road, rail, sea or air transport in any manner whatsoever. Whatever the matter the rule of law on public order must be obeyed by every person,” he added.

The CS also stated that all protestors must behave in a way that does not incite violence or riots. They must also comply with public order regulations.

Furthermore, all protestors must not intimidate or harass non-protesting members of the public, including police officers.

They should also inform the police that they intend to exercise this right. Police must also be aware of the timing.

Police must also be informed of the protestors’ intended routes during the demonstrations so that they can provide security and maintain law and order.

“They must also follow any other guidelines or law enforcement officers to ensure they are protected from non-protestors or infiltrators,” he added.

All protests must end at sunset, or at 6.30 p.m. Demonstrators must not obstruct any type of traffic throughout the protests.

He also stated that this violates the rights of other Kenyans who are not participating in the demonstrations.

CS Kindiki stated that the government was committed to ensuring that everyone’s rights were protected.
