REX MASAI: Family Pours Out Heartfelt Tribute As Mother Terms Him ‘My Strength’
On Thursday, the family and friends of slain protester Rex Kanyike Masai held a memorial service to remember and mourn him.
Emotions ran high as the family and friends struggled to come to terms with their son’s sudden death.
Rex was hailed as a brave man and a champion of justice whose bright future had been abruptly cut short.
While mourning her son, Rex’s mother described the sensation she felt when she first held him.
She described it as a watershed moment in her life when she received her bundle of joy.
“Rex, the strength of my youth, my first feeling as a mother, my first sleepaway taker but it holds for joy,” Rex’s mother said during the memorial service at ACK ST Stephens Cathedral Jogoo Road.
“I remember my first time breastfeeding you, you were my bundle of joy. I remember our first milestones, tembea baba tembea and you were looking back at me smiling.”
Rex’s mother stated that her son taught her to wear various hats, such as a teacher and a lawyer.
“Rex my first patient, you turned my fingers into a thermometer, I used to measure your temperature with my fingers. You taught me to be a teacher and a lawyer. Here you are teaching me how to live without you.”

She lamented that her son, who had taught her to be the strong woman she is, had left her with no final words.
“Sincerely, this is more than labour pains, may the Lord teach me how to delete your number in my phone. Goodnight my love, goodnight my teacher and goodnight until we meet again,” she added.
Rex was shot and killed during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi.
He was a young, creative man who had built a successful career.
Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding Rex’s shooting and death.
Human rights organisations have condemned Rex’s murder and called for an investigation.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority said it has already launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
Renson Ingonga, Director of Public Prosecutions, directed the Authority to submit a report on the investigations within 21 days.
