Activist Mwangi Urges Kenyans To Bury Protesters With The National Flag
Boniface Mwangi, an activist and human rights defender, has urged Kenyans to attend the burials of protesters killed during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations.
Mwangi stated that the protesters should be buried in caskets draped in the Kenyan flag because they died fighting for justice.
He attended the burial of one of the protesters, Andrew Mwawasi, on Saturday in Nairobi’s Lang’ata Cemetery.
Another protester, Chris Muriithi Gitonga of Nanyuki, was buried on Saturday, but his casket was not draped with the Kenyan flag.

“Andrew Kelvin Mwawasi has been laid to rest. For those who can, please make an effort to attend the funerals of those the state murdered. Bury them with the Kenyan flag, they died for us,” Mwangi said.
Mwangi was a key organizer of the Occupy Parliament protests on Tuesdays, June 18 and 25.
Kenyans took to the streets across the country to peacefully protest the Finance Bill 2024.
President William Ruto declined to sign the Finance Bill 2024 into law and returned it to Parliament.
However, Kenyans continued to protest, indicating that they were dissatisfied with the country’s governance.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission confirmed on Thursday that 41 people died and over 350 were injured, the majority of which were caused by police action.
President Ruto stated that the government will support families who have lost loved ones as well as those who have been injured.

He estimated the death toll at 25. In his Friday afternoon address to the nation, Ruto expressed condolences to the families of the deceased protesters.
“To the many others who lost their lives, I sent my condolences to the family,” he said.
“The government will support all those who have lost their lives, and all those who have been injured.”
As of Thursday, Kenyans had donated Sh29.9 million for the medical expenses of protesters who were injured during the mass demonstrations against the Finance Bill, 2024.
