Nairobi Ranked 10th Globally For Worst Road Traffic, Second In Africa

Nairobi was ranked second among African cities with the most traffic, behind Lagos in Nigeria, and tenth globally.

According to Numbeo’s Traffic Index, Nairobi has a score of 249.0, while Nigeria’s is 354.5. The report stated that the time index was 52.7 minutes.

This represents the average amount of time Kenyans in Nairobi spend on their commutes. According to the rankings, Nairobi has a carbon dioxide emission index of 7772.3.

Nairobi traffic has been a major source of concern for Kenyans, including those who live in the city as well as those who travel for business.

Public transport is a major mode of transportation in the city, resulting in increased traffic congestion in the capital. This is primarily used by Kenyans who commute to the city for work.

Increased traffic in the capital can be attributed to factors such as population growth, urbanization, and the number of Kenyans who own vehicles.

Thika Road, Jogoo Road, Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, Ngong Road, and Waiyaki Way are among the roads known for heavy traffic that lead to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Some of these roads can accommodate over 8,000 matatus per day, transporting thousands of passengers.

Nairobi Metropolitan Region Transportation data revealed that in 2021, passengers spent 57 minutes on the road for distances that should take 10 minutes.

According to previous research, commuters spend more than 40 hours per year stuck in traffic, and the increased use of private vehicles has exacerbated the situation.

On the other hand, Lagos had an estimated time index of 68.8 minutes. Other countries on the continent include Cairo in Egypt, Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban in South Africa.

Cairo has the highest traffic index on the continent, followed by Pretoria (228.1), Cape Town (209.3), Johannesburg (201.8), and Durban (119.1). The commute time ranged from 68.8 to 25.5 minutes.

Globally, Los Angeles ranked second behind Lagos, with a traffic index of 354.5 and an average commute time of 57.1 minutes. Other cities in the top ten were Colombo, Delhi, Dhaka, Kolkata, Mexico Mumbai, Jakarta and Bangalore.
