TIFA Survey Reveals That 79% of Kenyan Kwanza Supporters Back Gen Z Protests

Kenya has recently made international headlines following widespread youth protests.

The young protestors want the government to address a number of critical issues, including taxation, corruption, government accountability, the rising cost of living, and other concerns that Kenyans have.

A recent report published on Thursday by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) shows that support for the Gen Z movement has transcended political affiliations, with the majority of Kenya Kwanza supporters rallying behind it.

According to the report, 79% of Kenya Kwanza supporters welcome the Gen Z protests, with only 20% opposing them.

The TIFA report also shows that 91% of Azimio supporters support the protests, while 8% oppose them.

“This young generation, feeling leaderless and without party affiliation, has taken it upon themselves to demand change. Their leaderless and partyless stance underscores a deep disillusionment with traditional political structures, seeking to carve out a new path that truly represents their interests and aspirations,” the report reads in part.

The report goes on to list the top demands that Kenyans want President William Ruto to address.

These include reducing government spending, increasing youth employment, lowering the cost of living, combating corruption, ensuring government officials’ accountability, and expanding the fight against corruption.

Furthermore, the report indicates that the majority of Kenyans support the implementation of austerity measures to ensure that the Kenyan government lives within its means.

“Cutting down government spending (austerity measures) is the primary demand from Gen-Z demonstrations that most Kenyans support,” the report reads.

Police Brutality

According to the TIFA report, many Kenyans believe police used excessive force to quell protests, particularly in Nairobi and Nyanza.

“This sentiment reflects deep-rooted issues regarding law enforcement practices and raises critical questions about the balance between maintaining order and respecting the rights of protesters,” the report reads in part.

Furthermore, the report shows that the majority of Kenyans support the withdrawal of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) from Kenyan streets in response to the recent demonstrations.

“The broad support for withdrawing the army from the streets indicates a preference for non-military methods in managing protestors,” said the report’s conclusion.
