DCI Releases 2 Nairobi UDA MPs After Being Questioned About Protests Financing

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and his Embakasi Central counterpart Benjamin Gathiru, also known as Mejja Donk, have been released following questioning at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road.

The duo was brought in Wednesday evening for questioning about their alleged sponsorship of the recent anti-tax protests that shook the country and made international headlines.

The legislators are the latest allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to face questions about alleged funding for the Gen Z-led protests.

Speaking after their release, Gaguya dismissed the accusations as nothing more than a witch hunt.

“Anybody with any evidence of any facts of any mistake we did should come very clear and tell us ‘this particular day, you finance ABCD,” Gakuya said.

The two were brought in for questioning as detectives worked to identify the faces of those the government believes funded the protests.

They are believed to have had protests that occasionally turned chaotic, resulting in looting, business destruction, injuries, and deaths.

The government has repeatedly admitted that Gen Z’s peaceful exercise of their constitutional right to picket was infiltrated by goons allegedly paid to cause mayhem and discredit the mass action.

“They have also asked whether we were buying T-shirts and water which I believe is just political and they are just politicking,” Mejjadonk said.

Gaguya added: “They should stop forthwith witch-hunting people by painting them as followers of somebody because we are not, we are members of UDA.”

Their questioning brings the total number of Gachagua allies questioned about their potential involvement in sponsoring the demonstrations to five.

On Tuesday, detectives interviewed former Embakasi West MP Eric Theuri, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Gachagua’s private secretary Munene wa Mumbi.

Wambugu currently works as a political advisor in the DP’s office, while Theuri serves as the youth advisor in the same office.
