Toxic Gold-Leaching Chemicals Cause Stir In Migori After Spillage

Residents of Oruba-Siany, Migori County, have expressed concern about the release of toxic chemicals from some of the region’s gold-leaching plants.

Residents are now requesting intervention from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), claiming that their animals died after consuming water contaminated with mercury from some of the region’s leaching plants.

Samwel Juma told the media that the poisonous chemicals released by the leaching plants endanger the people and crops in the region.

His remarks were echoed by Titus Otieno, who stated that they have reported the situation to the appropriate authorities, who have not taken action.

Otieno stated that some of the region’s leaching plants were established without the involvement of locals through public participation.

Oruba-Ragana location chief Charles Ouma stated that he has received reports from locals regarding the spillage of poisonous chemicals and has reported the matter to the NEMA.

According to Ouma, some locals have lost their animals as a result of consuming water contaminated by chemicals from leaching plants.

He has asked NEMA to ensure that the leaching plants comply with the regulations.
