Senator Kajwang Questions Net Worth Of Ruto’s CS Nominees After Sham Vetting
Homa Bay County Senator Moses Kajwang has taken aim at the net worth declared by President William Ruto’s Cabinet nominees during the recently concluded vetting.
Kajwang, speaking on Monday, August 5, 2024, during a Citizen TV morning interview show, stated that the CS nominees declared large amounts of net worth during their vetting process.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker believes that instead of simply asking how much someone is worth, the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments should also inquire about how much the nominees have paid in taxes.
“Out of the inquiries that we have been doing yesterday and the previous days on vetting of public officials, we are being given huge amounts of net worth,” Kajwang stated.

“In fact for me that is the most useless question that we have asked. Because if we are going to ask someone about their net worth, then you must also ask them how much have you paid in terms of taxes.”
He claims that Kenya imposes a tax on everything, including capital gains.
Thus, if someone claims to have increased their net worth by Ksh100 million in a year, they must state whether they have paid taxes in proportion to the increase in wealth.
“Someone tells you that my income has grown by Ksh100 million over the last one year because of appreciation of value. But we introduce tax on everything including capital gains,” Kajwang said.
“Has this person paid tax commensurate to the increase in their wealth? You are actually making 99.9 per cent of Kenyans look poor.”
His remarks come a day after the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula-led committee completed the vetting of the Cabinet Secretaries appointed by President William Ruto days after dismissing his previous Cabinet.
During the vetting process, several nominees declared large sums of money.
