‘It Is Ours’ – EAC CS Nominee Defends Ksh.100 Million Net Worth
There was a light moment in parliament when the National Assembly Committee on Vetting and Appointments asked the Cabinet Secretary nominee for East African Community Affairs (EAC) and Regional Development, Beatrice Asukul Moe, to explain her Ksh.100 million net worth.
The MPs burst out laughing when Ms Moe stated that the wealth listed on her CV was not solely for her enjoyment, but also for the benefit of her community and family.
Kathiani MP Robert Mbui had sought the nominee to allay fears that her wealth was not ill-gotten, given that she had served as a Turkana County Executive Committee Member (CECM) and a Rift Valley Water Service Board Director.
In her response, Moe clarified that her wealth was acquired jointly with her husband through salaries and property investments.
“It has nothing to do with county government; it is our efforts and the humanitarian salary of somebody. I am married, my husband has worked in several places, he has been outside the country for 17 years,” she said.
“I am from a pastoralist community that is still rich in culture. The net worth is not mine, there is nothing under my name…The worth is not cash, it is the property we have.”
Moe, the first woman from Turkana to be nominated to the Cabinet, went on to say that her culture did not allow people to refer to their possessions solely as personal property.

She stated that the wealth benefits her family, friends, and community, so it cannot be referred to solely as personal net worth, but rather as community wealth.
“It is a family wealth…In my area, family wealth is equally community wealth, because when you have it, you have to support the neighbourhood, other relatives, community. Basically, the wealth is not mine, it is our worth,” she said amidst chuckles from the MPs.
