Kiambu-Based Police Officer Shoots Kenyan In A Cell, Goes Into Hiding
The family of Samson Mutunga Wambua, 23, is seeking justice after he was shot by a police officer on Friday inside the Kilimambogo Police Post in Thika, Kiambu County.
While narrating his ordeal to journalists, the 23-year-old revealed that he and his two friends were wrongfully arrested after being mistaken for criminals.
“We met with two officers from a security company who asked if we had seen a motorbike being ridden by someone trying to flee,” Wambua narrated.
“We replied that we had not encountered anything like that. Moments later, a vehicle from the security company pulled up “
“It was at this point that the officers working with the security company accused us of being thieves and demanded that police apprehend us on trespass charges,” the victim stated.
According to the victim’s account, he and his friends were tortured and whipped in the holding cell.
According to Wambua, the officer then roughed up one of his friends to the point where he began bleeding from the nose.
He let the injured friend go, knowing that this was incriminating and would land him in hot soup.
As this was happening, another officer was waiting at the station to take over the shift.
He took command, and at this point, the officer who had just been relieved went straight to the cell and shot Wambua in the ear without warning.
The victim claimed that the law enforcement officer was drunk when he fired the shot.
Speaking to journalists, Wambua’s mother, Stella Wanzila, urged the relevant authorities to take appropriate action to ensure justice is served.
“My son was shot for no reason. He had not committed any crime,” she appealed.
“I appeal upon Interior CS Kindiki to fight this battle for me because I am a widow and my son was our family’s breadwinner.”
Joakim Njama, the Ngoliba Member of County Assembly (MCA), where the Wambua family hails from, joined residents in demanding that justice be served.
“Police have a responsibility to serve Kenyans not to brutalise them. Let justice be served,” he stated.
