Kenyans Set To Pay To Use Thika Road, 3 Other Highways As KeNHA Announces New Plans
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) revealed on Tuesday that talks to implement tolls on several highways were already underway.
The Authority named Thika Superhighway, Nairobi Southern Bypass, and Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway as roads that are being considered for tolling.
Others include the Thika Superhighway, Kenol-Sagana-Marua Road, Mombasa Southern Bypass, and Dongo Kundu Bypass.

However, the authority assured that public participation would take place prior to any decisions being made.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority appreciates the ongoing discussion around the development of a Road Tolling Policy,” KeNHA announced.
“The Authority assures the public that this Policy will be developed with extensive public participation to ensure that all voices are heard.”
“Once the Policy is finalised, it will guide which roads will be tolled. KeNHA remains committed to transparency and inclusivity throughout this process and will continue to engage with the public at every stage.”
Kipchumba Murkomen, the state’s then-Transport Cabinet Secretary, hinted in February that tolls on several highways were under consideration.
At the time, the then-CS, who has since been transferred to the Sports Ministry, revealed that the state was willing to spend Ksh700 million to carry out the project.
He added that the tolls will be used to raise additional funds for road development.

Murkomen argued that the 10,000-kilometer road development plan released in 2013 did not include maintenance.
The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA)’s 2023-27 Strategic Plan already included tolls on major highways.
When the proposal was made public, the project was met with criticism from the public, who argued that the taxes collected should be enough to maintain the country’s roads.
