TRAGEDY: 12 Dead After 14-Seater Matatu Collides With A Truck Along Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway

On Monday, a road accident occurred at the Kipsitet Area in Koguta along the Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway, and several people are believed to have been killed.

The accident occurred when the Londiani-bound lorry lost control after hitting a porthole and colliding with a 14-seater matatu on its way to Kisumu.

According to preliminary reports, approximately thirteen people died as a result of the accident, while several others sustained critical injuries.

A rescue operation was quickly launched to assist those trapped beneath the wreckage. The rescue team consisted of police officers and locals.

Footage circulating widely depicted the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) as extensively damaged, with its windows shattered and pieces of glass scattered all over the road.

Meanwhile, the truck was damaged on the front, with footage showing it leaning on one of its sides and the windscreen completely broken.

Kericho County Commander Geoffrey Mayek confirmed the accident, revealing that the lorry driver fled the scene after causing it.

However, Mayek stated that an investigation into the underlying cause of the incident had already begun. The deceased were transferred to the St Vincent Mission Hospital.

The Muhoroni tragedy comes just two days after 12 people were killed in a car accident near the Nithi Bridge on the Nairobi-Meru highway.

Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacchaeus Ng’eno confirmed the incident, stating that the victims were passengers returning from a parental blessing ceremony in Meru.

According to the police commander, the driver was not familiar with the highway and was driving in the wrong lane when the accident occurred.

“So far, we are confirming that we have collected 12 bodies from this scene and two others injured,” Ng’eno revealed.

“This accident involved two motor vehicles, one was headed towards Nairobi and the other towards Meru.”
