President William Ruto will embark on another diplomatic mission to Germany next week, following a high-profile trip to China.

This will be Ruto’s second visit to Germany, following a lull in Kenyans’ outrage over the President’s frequent travels abroad.

His trip to Europe comes as Kenya and Germany work to finalise a migration agreement that could create 250,000 job opportunities for Kenyan workers in a variety of industries.

This historic agreement aims to streamline the process for skilled and semi-skilled Kenyans to find work in Europe’s largest economy.

This agreement, months in the making, represents a strategic partnership between Kenya and Germany. Both nations aim to address their labour market needs.

For Kenya, this is an excellent opportunity to reduce unemployment, while for Germany, it provides a solution to the country’s labor shortage.

The draft agreement includes provisions to protect the rights and welfare of Kenyan workers in Germany, which was a key point in negotiations between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to meet with President Ruto in Berlin on Friday.

During the meeting, the two leaders will sign the final version of the migration agreement, completing what has been described as a historic transaction.

This agreement could not be more timely for Kenya. With high unemployment rates, particularly among young people, sending 250,000 workers to Germany is seen as a major win for Ruto’s government.

While the agreement focuses on skilled migration, it also allows for semi-skilled and professional workers, providing Kenyans with a wide range of opportunities to improve their livelihoods abroad.

Speaking from Berlin, Steffen Hebestreit, a German government spokesman, confirmed the Kenya-Germany skills-set immigration agreement.

“The framework agreement will facilitate the immigration of skilled labour and address the repatriation of those who are required to leave the country,” stated Hebestreit.

This includes Kenyan workers who may be forced to return home in certain circumstances, such as failed asylum applications.

The agreement aims to create a structured process that benefits both countries.

He recently spent a week in China, where he sought to expand economic cooperation and investment.

His September schedule remains full, with another trip to New York later in the month to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Beyond migration issues, Ruto’s visit to Germany will include an appearance as a guest of honor at the Citizens’ Festival in Berlin.
