Full Report On Multimedia University Student Battered By Police
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) announced on Wednesday that investigations were underway into police officers caught on video using excessive force against a Multimedia University student during Tuesday’s protests.
According to preliminary findings from the IPOA investigations, a teargas canister thrown by police inside one of the ladies’ hostels blew off, causing a fire before being extinguished by university staff.

IPOA also stated that the student in the video, whose identity was established, raptured his leg after being tortured and left near a teargas canister that exploded.
“The Authority established that police lobbed a teargas canister in a girls’ hostel which exploded and caused fire. The fire was later put off by university staff.
“Upon conclusion of the investigation, IPOA will recommend action, including but not limited to prosecution of officers if culpability is established,’’ the statement from IPOA read in part.

The authority also revealed that it had already initiated investigations into the matter following the injury reports.
“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority yesterday, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, instituted investigations following demonstrations by students at Multimedia University where initial reports indicate learners were injured,’’ added the statement.
“Rapid Response Team was dispatched to the varsity and among other instructions, to establish the veracity of a video clip widely shared on social media, depicting a youth being assaulted by police officers.”
During the student-organized demonstrations, there were reports of police using excessive force, with videos circulating showing a student being manhandled by officers wearing helmets and riot gear.

They were protesting the university’s management’s failure to implement proper hygienic practices.
The student’s efforts to persuade the officers to spare him were futile, as the officers continued to treat him with malice.
The officers were later seen throwing a tear gas canister next to him, which exploded. Throughout, the officers continued to push him to the ground before walking away.
Other students, whose voices could be heard in the video, shouted in hushed tones out of fear of being targeted.
