Over 30 female Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have joined six Kenyan Women Governors in supporting Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru for the Deputy Presidency position.

Speaking at the G7 Summit in Kirinyaga County on Thursday, the leaders praised Waiguru as a transformative leader whose work in Kirinyaga County and as a Council of Governors (COG) chair puts her in a strong position to take on larger national roles.

The G7 movement brings together Kenya’s seven female governors: Kirinyaga’s Anne Waiguru, Machakos’ Wavinya Ndeti, Nakuru’s Susan Kihika, Homa Bay’s Gladys Wanga, Embu’s Cecily Mbarire, Kwale’s Fatuma Achani, and Meru’s Kawira Mwangaza.

The county leaders praised Waiguru’s mentorship of women leaders across the country, as well as the development projects she had completed in her own county.

Gladys Wanga, for her part, insisted that Waiguru was a strong woman suitable for any position. She went on to say that all of the G7 colleagues had learned something from her leadership style in Kirinyaga County.

Her Machakos counterpart, Wavinya Ndeti, expressed similar sentiments.

“Governor Anne Waiguru is a worker. We are here to learn and sharpen each other,” Ndeti said.

“We have just seen the Kerugoya Hospital where I got to witness its initiation and I am happy that it was completed and well-equipped. The standards in that hospital are only equitable to those in some of the biggest hospitals in this country.”

Holding the record as Kenya’s first female governor, her colleagues said her determination inspired them to run for the position, breaking the glass ceiling for all women in the country.

Kwale’s Achani praised Waiguru as an excellent mentor and role model.

Achani stated that Waiguru has been a champion for women’s leadership in the country, putting her in a strong position to enter the national political arena.

Aside from the governors, Ida Odinga, the G7 movement’s patron, joined the conversation, stating that she, too, was impressed by Kirinyaga county’s developments, which reflected Waiguru’s readiness for the next level.

The women’s representatives also pledged their unwavering support if she runs for president in 2032.

“We have seen the good work that Waiguru has done and we are saying the future is women. Come 2032 and the President shall be a woman and Waiguru will be there,” Faith Gitau, Nyandarua County’s Women Representative said.

She was supported by fellow women MPs from Nairobi and Samburu Counties, Esther Passaris and Naisula Lesuuda, who said Waiguru’s national development record, including Huduma Centres, demonstrated her readiness.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya also praised Waiguru’s Kirinyaga County development efforts, claiming that only a woman could do that kind of work.

After thanking her colleagues for recognizing her efforts, Waiguru noted that women have long been underrepresented in positions of power.

This, she explained, was why the G7 movement sought to provide a framework for collective efforts to realize the true potential of devolution in Kenya while amplifying the voices of women in leadership.

The G7 movement aims to elect more women leaders to positions of power and eventually achieve the two-thirds gender rule in Kenyan government.
