Mumbua, a Mombasa taxi driver, went missing on September 27 after accepting a trip request from a Kenyan seeking transportation from Mombasa to Samburu.
Two days after that request, police arrested the 33-year-old suspect at the Pipeline Junction on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway while driving a white Nissan Serena believed to be Mumbua’s.
Muloki’s mother, Anne Kanini, received information that her daughter had been found injured and unconscious in Migori county and would be airlifted back to Mombasa, resulting in a series of conflicting reports.
Hours after the update, however, neither the family nor the media had received any additional information on Mumbua’s whereabouts, raising concerns.
It became clear that Mumbua’s family had fallen for a ruse.
The victim’s mother revealed that they had sent Ksh 20,000 to someone in Migori, who claimed the money would help Mumbua get back to Mombasa.

After receiving the Ksh 20,000 from Mumbua’s family, the caller turned off their phone, leaving them guessing about their kin’s fate.
Particularly because police spokesperson Resila Onyango appeared to confirm reports that the taxi driver had been located.
The victim’s parents have been notified of the update and plan to travel to Nairobi for identification.
A post-mortem has yet to be conducted to discover the cause of the victim’s death.
