Governor Wanga Praises EPRA After ‘Getting It Right’ With Fuel Price

Gladys Wanga, governor of Homa Bay, expressed pride at the Energy Regulatory Authority’s announcement of a cut in fuel prices on Monday.

Epra reported that the maximum retail prices for imported refined petroleum products for the October-November cycle had reduced dramatically.

According to a statement from the authorities, Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene prices have fallen by Sh8.18, Sh3.54, and Shs.6.93 per litre, respectively, from October 15, 2024 to November 14, 2024.

“Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Sh180.66, Sh168.06, and Sh151.39 respectively in Nairobi starting midnight,” Epra said in a dispatch.

The price decline occurs exactly two months after new Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi took over from his predecessor, Davis Chirchir, on August 14.

Wandayi is one of four Chief Secretaries in Kenya’s Kwanza cabinet who were appointed by President William Ruto from the opposition ODM.

This came after a series of Generation Z-led public rallies piled pressure on his administration, with demonstrators demanding better governance and lower living costs.

Current African Union Commission chairmanship candidate Raila Odinga, then in charge of the Opposition wing, claimed that Ruto urged him to ‘gift’ some of ODM’s experts, which he did.

Wanga, an ODM member, commented on the fuel price decline, saying the experts appear to be doing their job.

“Breaking News: Epra reduces petrol prices by Sh8.18, diesel by Sh3.54 and kerosene by Sh6.93. Our experts seem to be getting it right,” she said on X hours after Epra made the announcement.

Raila Odinga said on Saturday, July 27, during the burial of lawyer Evans Oruenjo in Siaya, that Ruto had asked him to recruit some opposition professionals to help him govern the country.

“I told Ruto to wait for a pre-agreement but he said he was in a hurry to have a new Cabinet in place,” Raila said.

“I had told him if you feel you are in a fix, just make your things work. He requested that he had a government to run and so he had an urgent need to consolidate a Cabinet.”

On July 24, Ruto appointed Mbadi to the Treasury docket, Wandayi as Energy Cabinet Secretary, Joho as new Mining Cabinet Secretary, and Oparanya as new MSMEs and Cooperatives Development CS.
