Only a few months after setting a new world marathon record, Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, died in a horrific car accident.
Following this, Kiptum’s admirers expressed their outrage and conjecture about why the 24-year-old’s life was ended so quickly, with Kipchoge being the target of some false charges.
In a recent interview with NTV, Kipchoge described how his life was affected by Kiptum’s passing and said that he only grieved the emerging marathon star for fifteen minutes.
Kipchoge, the first person in history to complete a marathon in less than two hours, was harshly criticized on social media for his strange quiet on the subject right after Kiptum’s passing. Some critics claimed the marathoner was terrified by Kiptum’s potential.
He added, “Immediately I got my phone, instead of mourning the death of somebody, then a whole thing came to my side that I am the one who killed him.”
Kipchoge went on to say that his detractors had plotted to harm him by setting fire to his home or injuring his kids.
In any case, Kipchoge insists that he was accustomed to the criticism and never feared death.
Other Kenyan athletes continue to honor him through their individual accomplishments months after his passing.
Ruth Chepng’etich broke the previous world record in the women’s division at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday and dedicated her impressive win to Kiptum.

“I am dedicating this world record to Kevin Kiptum. I am sure if he was here today, he could have defended his title and maybe gone for a world record again. I am also happy that this world record has come to Kenya,” announced Chepng’etich.
John Korir acknowledged that he was greatly influenced by the late marathoner, which is why he won the men’s marathon title and brought it back to Kenya.
Kipchoge, who is perhaps nearing the end of his Olympic career, will probably no longer participate on the Olympic stage after suffering his first-ever DNF (did not finish) at the Paris Olympics.
Though he had no clear objective in mind, the legendary 39-year-old road runner denied rumors that he was hanging up his marathon shoes, promising to keep racing and “sell a new story.”
