DP Gachagua Issues Warning To MPs Over Impeachment

Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachangua sent a message to members of Parliament a month after they overwhelmingly removed him from office.

Gachagua, speaking at the burial ceremony for Mwalimu Geoffrey Murugami in Limuru on Wednesday, told the MPs that they are currently reaping the benefits of impeaching him.

The former deputy president claimed that members of Parliament were not given opportunities to speak publicly after impeaching him.

“Wajumbe mumeona siku hizi hamupewi nafasi ya kuzungumza (mbele ya watu) kwa sababu ile tabia mlifanya pale Bunge imekasirisha raia.” Gachagua told the mourners.

The meaning is uncertain: “As you can see members of Parliament, you are not given a platform to speak because what you did in Parliament angered Kenyans.”

The former deputy president was impeached after the Senate upheld 282 MPs’ decision to remove him from office accusing him of 11 charges.

On Tuesday, October 8, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported Gachagua’s impeachment. 282 MPs supported Gachagua’s impeachment, 44 voted against it, and only one abstained.

Kibwezi MP Mwengi Mutuse filed an impeachment motion against Gachagua, accusing him of 11 charges including corruption, ethnically divisive politics, and undermining the government.

The former DP denied all charges, describing the impeachment drive against him as outrageous, pure propaganda, and a political witch hunt.

The embattled DP praised Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, and Juja MP George Koimburi, assuring Mt Kenya residents that those leaders were trustworthy and could never be bought.

Following his impeachment hearings, Gachagua expressed his confidence in the judiciary, stating that he believes they will uphold the Constitution and deliver justice.

“We have faith that our Judiciary will protect and uphold the Constitution of Kenya and will exercise fairness and give justice to Rigathi Gachagua and his supporters. That is our prayer,” said Gachagua.
