EXPLAINED: How KCSE Exams Leaks Through Telegram, Scammers Milk Millions

As the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations continue, candidates, teachers, and parents have fallen victim to fraudsters who use social media platforms to extract millions of shillings from them in the name of distributing exam papers.

An NTV investigative report uncovered how exam fraudsters use Telegram to entice unprepared candidates, teachers, and parents who want to assist students who rely on leaks to pass exams.

According to reports, the fraudsters claim to be able to give students early access to the KCSE papers if they pay a certain amount of money.

The amount you pay will determine the number of exam papers you will have access to.

What is most perplexing is how these fraudsters gained access to these papers and took photographs of the exam papers immediately after they were opened or while the exam was in progress, using them to entice more customers.

As the exams continue, the Telegram page ‘Official KCSE Leakages 2024’ has grown in popularity, with over 72,000 subscribers in the last five days.

The fraudsters charge different packages based on their needs.

One would have to pay Ksh3,500 for a single paper, with the total cost exceeding Ksh18,000. This amount has since been reduced to Ksh12,000 for VIP access, which provides access to all papers until the end of the examinations.

According to NTV’s investigative reports, once the fraudsters have received the money, they disappear without providing the necessary documentation.

They made the necessary payments while waiting for the Kiswahili paper they had requested. Following payment, they were prompted to wait for verification, which took more than 30 minutes.

“I am not sure how to respond to that. This is an automated KCSE LEAKAGE BOT,” read the message NTV reporters got after paying for the leakage.

“Every resource is available here. Follow the procedure to access the KCSE leakages and other services, and contact admin for more. Please use the menu buttons / start to access our services.”

This is how scammers have deceived parents, teachers, and candidates into believing they have access to the papers.

As soon as the exams begin, the scammers post photos of exam papers on the page, deceiving unsuspecting Kenyans into believing they have prior access to the exams.

This raises serious concerns about the credibility of the center’s examining officers, who still have access to their phones and can take photos of the papers to collude with scammers, which is not permitted.

This concerning revelation comes at a time when the Ministry of Education has promised to close all loopholes and ensure that exams do not leak.

Dr Belio Kipsang, Education PS, stated on Friday that only 11 cases of examiners attempting to sneak mobile phones and other information gadgets into examination centers had been documented.
