Gov’t Promises Free Internet Connection To All TVETs

The government intends to connect all technical and vocational education training institutes (TVETs) to the Internet, according to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Mudavaid stated that the strategy aligns with the creation of 1,450 digital hubs across the country.

He stated that the initiative’s goal is to stimulate the creation of jobs and other sources of income, particularly for young people.

Approximately 274 digital hubs have already been developed in TVET colleges throughout the country.

“The digital hub model will ensure that everyone within the coverage area, including students, researchers and small business operators, has access to the Wi-Fi that it provides,” explained Mudavadi.

“In addition to the fiber internet itself, having wi-fi coverage across the entire hub ensures anyone can bring their device to get connected.”

At Kakamega County Polytechnic, the Prime CS launched the Information and Communication Technologies Digital Hub and Digital Economy Conference.

Mudavadi stated that the creation of high-end “Jitume ICT Digital Hubs” is the critical entry point into the developing digital economy, which is improving the lives of individuals across the country.

Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutes (TVETs) are the primary beneficiaries of the ground-breaking program being carried out by the Konza Technopolis Development Authority under the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Digital Economy.

“The free internet provided in these hubs enables our youth to acquire digital skills and connect to global online learning and e-commerce resources,” added Mudavadi.

“Access to reliable power, either from the national grid or solar systems, is critical to maximise the impact of these hubs on the local communities.”

He went on to say that the hubs are major consumers of the fiber optic cable that the government has installed around the country.

“The Government has practically demonstrated that leveraging digital technologies enhances efficiency and stimulates opportunities for socioeconomic transformation,” said Mudavadi.

Mudavadi noted that President William Ruto led the nation in commemorating the e-citizen Directorate’s first anniversary and the progress made in making government services available online.

He stated that President Ruto’s government has made tremendous progress in establishing Kenya as a global leader in the integration of citizen services on Internet platforms.

He also stated that the government has added 17,692 services to the e-citizen platform, up from 354 previously.

This figure represents 85 percent of the 20,721 services identified for onboarding.

“The President’s directive to collapse 1,130 pay bills into a single pay bill, 222222, for all payments for government services, has significantly cut down on leakages in revenue collection,” said Mudavadi.

“The turnaround is encouraging and the government now collects billions of shillings more every month.”

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa announced plans to provide modern computers and internet connectivity to 12 polytechnics in the county’s 12 constituencies.

According to Barasa, the plan aims to bridge the knowledge gap and increase broad engagement in social, political, and economic activities.
