Protesters gathering in Nairobi on Tuesday morning to protest the country’s rising femicide rate were teargassed by police personnel in the city’s CBD.

Clouds of smoke can be seen emanating from teargas cans thrown by officers to disperse the gathering in a number of videos and photographs posted on X.

The highly anticipated march concluded the 16-day campaign against gender-based violence and aimed to bring together women, human rights activists, and allies to raise awareness about the issue of femicide, which has afflicted the country in recent months.

The ‘EndFemicideKe’ X handle, which was important in planning the protests, also confirmed the event and urged anybody affected to contact their emergency line 0716200100 for assistance.

Updates on social media have included claims of Naivas Supermarket and City Market being teargassed.

Adelle Onyango, a media personality, also posted an update, indicating that the march’s starting point, Jeevanjee Gardens, had been abandoned after police forces teargassed those who arrived.

“Just gotten to Jivanjee. Learning that cops dispersed everyone. The Subaru boys are still here saying we shouldn’t convene because ‘it’s Christmas and we are disturbing the peace’,” she wrote.

This is in stark contrast to what most protestors expected, as the campaign had been government-backed, with Ksh100 million given to combat the vice by President William Ruto on November 20.

The statement was followed by a call to action to engage in the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, which began on November 25.

“Matters psychological support and safe spaces for women and children are a priority in my office,” President Ruto remarked.

“Through the women’s rights advisor, we are launching a safe home safe space campaign during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence that will start on November 25, 2024.”

“Our communities need education on the signs and causes of abuse and resources available to victims.”

The address came in response to a disturbing report that 97 women had been killed in just three months since August.

He also stated that a commission, led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, had been constituted to develop actionable and long-term solutions to stop femicide completely.
