Two Dutch visitors are said to have died in an accident on the Mombasa-Kilifi Highway near Mariakani in Kilifi.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, at about 7 a.m. when a van transporting the visitors lost control and collided with an oncoming trailer.

Resila Onyango, a police spokesperson, confirmed the accident to the press and said that additional tourists were taken to the hospital after being injured.

According to reports, four persons were injured: two tourists, a driver, and a tour guide.

According to Onyango, the vehicle was on its way to Nairobi when it strayed off course and collided with a trailer bound for Mombasa.

The crash caused a massive traffic jam on the major roadway as police and people battled to clear the wreckage.

Images from the site showed spectators marveling at the sight from afar while rescuers recovered those trapped inside the van.

The collision adds to the number of traffic deaths reported around the country in recent weeks.
