DETAILS: Machakos, Bomet Highest Radio Listenership As Turkana & Samburu Media Blacked-Out
Radio is most popular in Machakos and Bomet counties, dethroning western Kenya, which had dominated listenership for decades.
According to an analytical analysis of ICT uptake based on the Kenya Demographic Health Survey, 2022, Machakos County had the greatest proportion of males who listened to the radio, at 99.5%, followed by Bomet County, at 91.1%.
This suggests that at least nine out of 10 people in those counties are actively listening to radio stations, compared to the national average of 80% for both men and women.
Other counties with high radio listenership in the country are Narok, Kisumu, Makueni, Nandi for men and Vihiga Nyandarua, Kiambu, and Murang’a for women.
Radio is the least popular medium in Mandera County, accounting for only 20% of total listening. According to the report, only 35% of men in the county and a mere 5.5 percent of women watch.

According to previous reports, Western Kenya has the greatest rate of radio listening, with nearly nine out of ten individuals (85%).
According to the Audience Measurement and Industry Trends Report, only 62% of individuals in North Eastern listen to the radio, with Nairobi having the second-lowest listenership at 69%.
According to the data, guys who were widowed at the time of the survey had the greatest radio listenership (98.5%).
The majority of female radio listeners (79.3%) were currently living with their partners.
The findings also revealed that married males (58.9%) and men living with partners (62.8%) used the internet more frequently than their female counterparts did.
Divorced women (42.4%) and separated women (47.9%) used the internet more than men (37.8 and 45.5%, respectively).
Nationally, 71.1% of men listened to the radio at least once a week, while 62.2% of women did.
In urban regions, the incidence was 63% for males and 61% for females.
In rural areas, 76.5 percent of men and 62.9% of women listened to the radio at least once a week.
Analysis by age category revealed that males aged 35 to 44 had the largest regular listenership (77.3%), while females aged 25 to 34 had the highest (64.2%).
Uasin Gishu County had the largest proportion of males viewing TV (98.2%), whereas Kiambu County had the highest proportion of ladies watching TV (90.5%), as seen in Figure 2.17.
Turkana, Tana River, Wajir, and Mandera counties had the lowest proportion of males and females watching television.
Nationally, the proportions of males and females who utilized the Internet were 56.2 and 44.2%, respectively.
Nairobi City County had the largest proportion of male and female internet users, with 89.7 and 76.4 percent, respectively.
Kiambu and Uasin Gishu counties had the most male and female internet users, while Mandera, Tana River, and Turkana counties had the fewest.

Nationally, 80.4% of males and 77.5% of females had a mobile phone, with 49.1% of males and 42.7% of females owning smartphones.
In the 12 months preceding the study, 56.2% of men and 44.2% of women utilized the internet at least once.
Access to electricity is a crucial driver of ICT adoption, as households with stable power are more likely to use various ICT devices and internet services.
97.6% of households with electricity owned mobile phones, 70.9% owned televisions, and 74.0% owned radios.
