Kenya’s status as an athletic powerhouse skyrocketed in 2024, with its competitors breaking records in a variety of disciplines.

Kenyan athletes dominated local and international track and marathon events.

They displayed exceptional excellence, establishing the country’s reputation in international sports.

Ruth Chepng’etich

Ruth Chepng’etich made one of the year’s most historic achievements.

The long-distance runner shattered her marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon in October 2024, finishing in 2:09:56.

Chepngetich knocked nearly two minutes off the previous world mark of 2:11:53, achieved by Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa in September 2023, and won her third race in Chicago.

This was the first time a woman ran a marathon in under two hours and ten minutes, cementing her place as one of history’s greatest marathoners.

Chepng’etich’s achievement not only motivated other competitors but also demonstrated Kenya’s unwavering superiority in long-distance running.

Beatrice Chebet

Kenya’s golden girl, Beatrice Chebet, had an incredible 2024 season.

She is without a doubt one of the best long-distance runners in history, and her nomination for the World Athletics Female Track Athlete of the Year Award is well-deserved.

In May 2024, Beatrice Chebet broke the women’s 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

She ran 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds at Hayward Field in a competition advertised as the Kenyan Olympic Trials for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in July and August of 2024.

Chebet became the first woman to break 29 minutes in the event, surpassing Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey’s world record of 29:01.03 from 2021.

“We did not come for a world record,” said Chebet, who raced a 10,000m for the first time since March 2020.

“For us Kenya, we came for trials in Paris.”

Beatrice Chebet kept her commitment and performed an outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics.

Chebet became the third woman in history to win gold medals in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the same Olympic Games.

“I am happy being a double Olympic champion in my first Olympic appearance. It was not easy getting that gold medal and I had to fight for it,” she stated.

Faith Kipyegon

Faith Kipyegon’s extraordinary exploits in 2024 cemented her place as one of the best middle-distance athletes in the sport’s history.

She was the first athlete, male or female, to win three Olympic titles in the 1500m.

Kipyegon’s domination was further cemented earlier this year, in July 2024, when she broke the 1500m world record at the Paris Diamond League, improving to 3:49.04.

Her outstanding performances and consistency garnered her consideration for the 2024 Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award, further establishing her global sporting prominence.
