Kenya Set Designate Consulates In China, Haiti – PCS Mudavadi

Kenya will establish a consulate in Haiti next year, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi revealed.

During a press meeting on Friday, December 20, Mudavadi announced that Kenya will also open a consulate in Guangzhou, China.

Kenya will soon add a consulate to its embassy in Beijing, albeit the reasons for this move have not been divulged.

This move comes as roughly 4,000 Kenyan students are now enrolled in institutions throughout China.

Additionally, Kenya intends to open a consulate in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, next year. This statement comes 15 months after Kenya and Haiti normalized their diplomatic ties.

Kenya and Haiti established diplomatic ties in September 2023, with both states agreeing to station ambassadors in each other’s countries.

In a joint statement signed by former Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry and then-Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, the two countries expressed their desire to expand friendship ties for mutual benefit and the pursuit of shared interests.

Kenya established diplomatic connections before deploying police officers to Haiti to assist maintain calm in the unstable Caribbean nation.

“Guided by the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, International Law, and Treaties, we have decided to establish diplomatic relations from the date of signing this joint communiqué,” the statement read in part.

Since then, Kenya has sent 400 officers to Haiti and participated in the liberation of the country’s principal international airport in Port-au-Prince in May, over three months after it was forced to close.

The operation has encountered numerous problems, with reports this week claiming that the United States, the United Nations, and other foreign partners have yet to send funds to Kenya for the deployment of 600 police officers to Haiti.

This has heightened concerns about budgetary limits, which have recently resulted in reports of several workers resigning.

Reuters reported in early November that 20 MSS personnel in Kenya had filed resignation letters to their superiors due to delayed wage payments.

Reuters identified three police officers who claimed to have submitted resignation letters.

In a press statement, the MSS denied that any officers had resigned and verified that all personnel had received full wages and allowances.
