Matatu Collides With Lorry Leaving 6 People Injured Along Sagana-Karatina Highway
At least six persons are critically injured after their 14-seater matatu was involved in a collision on the Karatina-Sagana Highway in Ndia, Kirinyaga County.
The accident occurred when a lorry lost control and drove off its lane, colliding with a matatu stopped beside the road.
First responders who spoke with the press stated that the accident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. and that the six people were inside the matatu when the lorry collided with the stranded vehicle.
Other passengers who were outside the matatu narrowly survived the accident after initially exiting the vehicle to await the driver’s return.
Following the accident, some of the passengers, together with a group of locals, took those injured to Kibingoti Hospital for treatment.

Moments later, traffic policemen from the Sagana Police Station came and blocked off the area. Meanwhile, the two vehicles were transported to Sagana Police Station for further investigation.
While speaking to journalists, the officers asked motorists to be cautious and follow traffic laws, especially during the festive season, when most Kenyans travel.
The Kirinyaga disaster occurred two days after Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi urged traffic police officials to crack down on unworthy road cars and enforce traffic laws.
In a news briefing, Mudavadi stated that the increased patrols will be performed to discourage reckless driving and speeding, as well as to prevent unlicensed and overloaded Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from running.

“I direct strict enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness regulations, including ensuring that all PSVs have valid road service licenses. This will help to ensure that only safe vehicles are on the road,” Mudavadi stated.
According to NTSA statistics, more motorcyclists, passengers, and pedestrians were killed or seriously injured this year.
Between January and November, 4,047 persons perished in traffic accidents, compared to 3,726 in the same time last year.
In 2024, there were 20,369 accidents, compared to 19,262 in 2023. These accidents resulted in 10,124 serious injuries, up from 9,059 the previous year.
