Raila Reacts To Tragic Magdeburg Market Attack, Calls It ‘Senseless’

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has condemned the horrific attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, which killed five people.

Raila took to social media on Saturday evening to express his sorrow, stating that the attack occurred in the place where he studied in Germany and has a strong emotional attachment.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the senseless attack in Magdeburg, Germany, which has tragically claimed five lives and left over 200 injured,” Raila wrote on X.

“Magdeburg holds a special place in my heart; it’s not just a beautiful city but also the backdrop of my journey as a Mechanical Engineering student.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all who have lost loved ones in this heartbreaking event. May they find solace during this season of goodwill and compassion.”

The attack on Friday stunned the globe, when the offender allegedly drove into the market, murdering four ladies and a nine-year-old kid and gravely injuring 41 others.

Raila, who is suspected of committing a hate crime, also asked the world community to accept diversity and work for peaceful coexistence.

“In times like these, it’s evident that our world would be a safer, more harmonious place if we embraced our differences, fostered tolerance for divergent views, and truly learned to coexist in peace. Let us strive for understanding and unity in the face of adversity,” he added.

Following the attack, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who had been living in Germany for more than a decade was arrested.

According to CNN, the Magdeburg Public Prosecutor’s Office is still investigating the motivation but suspects the offender was disgruntled with Germany’s handling of Saudi refugees.

He returned to Magdeburg earlier this year, homesick for his alma mater and other city institutions.

“I spent part of the day reflecting in Germany at my alma mater, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg,” he said of his visit.

“I visited the Engineering Faculty, the Production Technology Department, and lecture halls, and reminisced in the halls of residence. Grateful for my foundational experiences here.”
