DCI Detectives Arrest MP In Eldoret As ODM Issues Demands

On Thursday evening, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) reported that one of its staunch party members and a member of the National Assembly was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In a statement issued Thursday, December 26, ODM stated that Turkana South MP John Ariko, who also serves as the party’s deputy chairman, was seized by officials in Eldoret.

“DCI officers in Eldoret have this evening arrested Turkana South MP Mr. John Ariko, our National Vice Chairman without any explanation,” ODM said in a statement.

According to ODM, Ariko was then escorted to the Central Police Station in Eldoret Town, where the reason for the purported arrest has yet to be revealed.

In the same statement, ODM sent a communication to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, asking why their vice chair was arrested.

Ariko was one of several well-known individuals offered new responsibilities at the August party.

Following President William Ruto’s Cabinet shake-up, ODM sought to make positive changes to its leadership.

Ariko, known for his support to former ODM party leader Raila Odinga, has often avoided political controversy, although frequently expressing his concern for Turkana’s people on his official social media profiles.

One of his most recent public appearances was at Lokichar Baraza Park in Turkana South Constituency to commemorate Jamhuri Day.

Notably, ODM’s latest demand put further pressure on the National Police and Kanja, who has been under national scrutiny over a recent rise in abductions.

Following an online outcry over the strange disappearances of many social media stars, Kanja was forced to publish a statement on Wednesday stressing that police had no involvement in the abductions.

“For clarity, the Constitutional mandate of the National Police Service is not to abduct, but arrest criminal offenders,” the IG said.

Kanja went on to explain that police arrests are normally recorded in the Occurrence Book for later arraignment in court.

If this does not occur, the suspects are likely to be freed from police custody.
