TOP 5 Kenyans Whose Fame Rose Overnight In 2024

In 2024, a handful of Kenyans became overnight sensations, thanks largely to viral incidents and social media chatter.

From grassroots leaders who wowed audiences with their humor to surprise lookalikes who drew notice due to uncanny resemblances, these people rose to prominence almost overnight.

Here’s a look at five people who became household celebrities overnight, each with their own tale that captivated their audiences.

Protus Wechuli – Trans-Nzoia ‘Misheveve’ Chief

Chief Protus Wechuli Sifuna, from Saboti in Trans Nzoia County, won many hearts with his endearing blend of humour and dependability.

His famous catchphrase,’misheveve,’ has become synonymous with his approachable attitude, accelerating his climb to prominence.

Wechuli rose to prominence through a series of viral videos, but one story in particular resonated with viewers.

He told an astonishing story about a man who tragically murdered his father over a disagreement about pumpkin leaves (seveve).

In this now-iconic video, Wechuli expertly recounts a scene in which a young guy has a furious dispute with his mother about the veggies she made.

His comedic timing shines through as he delivers the punchline.

Akaulizia mama ‘unapika mbogo gani?’ Mama akasema ‘leo nimeunda misheveve’. Kijana akasema ‘sikutaka hizi ilitaka sarat’,” the chief narrated.

Alianza kwa kutafuna mzee vidole. Anatafuna mzee vidole ni kama anatafuna omena na kumbe anafanya hesabu ya minus kwa uhai wa mzee na mzee huyu ni mkaza,” he added, leaving his audience doubled over with laughter.

Henry Omondi – ‘Ameuza Airport’ Protester

Henry Omondi, often known as the ‘ameuza airport’ protester or simply ‘kijana ya airport’, became an internet phenomenon during the Occupy JKIA protests in July 2024.

This followed allegations that President William Ruto had leased Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to an Indian investor, causing great indignation among Kenyans.

In response, Generation Z activists planned a march to JKIA to voice their indignation.

Henry became popular after videos of him fiercely criticizing Ruto for selling the airport leaked online.

Henry continued to rage, wondering how Ruto could sell the airport when his predecessors had not dared.

Moi hajauza airport, Kenyatta hajauza airport, Ouru [Uhuru] hajauza airport. Kwani yeye ni nani anakuja kutuuzia airport?” he exclaimed.

It was later discovered that the Kenyan government intended to lease JKIA to the Adani Group for 30 years.

However, following corruption allegations against the Indian conglomerate in the United States, President Ruto revoked the agreement in his State of the Nation address on November 21, 2024.

Nelson Amenya – The Adani Whistleblower

Nelson Amenya became a household celebrity almost quickly after he courageously blew the whistle on a clandestine agreement to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Adani Airport Holdings Limited.

In a riveting discovery in mid-2024, Amenya exposed a cloak of secrecy that surrounds this agreement, exposing how it avoided critical public oversight and parliamentary examination.

But it wasn’t simply the lack of transparency that triggered red flags.

Amenya found disturbing details that pointed to a massive loss of billions of dollars in revenue for Kenya, as well as the unsettling potential of local workers being systematically replaced by foreign personnel on conditions that favored the Adani Group.

While pursuing an MBA at HEC Paris, Amenya, who has a strong background in design and advertising from Moi University, came to a fork in the road.

His discoveries sparked a barrage of threats from all sides, including intimidation measures from state security institutions, sending waves of fear throughout his journey.

Rather than give in to pressure, Amenya’s heroic stand provoked a surge of protests across the country, prompting the government to halt the transaction and demand a comprehensive audit.

Nelson Amenya rose to prominence not only as a whistleblower but also as a symbol of hope for responsibility and change in a complex society.

Mwengi Mutuse

Kibwezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Mwengi Mutuse rose to national prominence not only for initiating the impeachment process against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua but also for his significant gaffes during the Senate grilling.

Mutuse received harsh criticism after fumbling frequently during cross-examination by Rigathi Gachagua’s legal team, led by lawyer Elisha Ongoya.

A dramatic clash ensued in the Senate, with Gachagua’s legal team taking the floor to cross-examine Mutuse.

The Kibwezi West MP, who moved the impeachment resolution in the National Assembly, struggled to back up major assertions.

Ongoya urged the Kibwezi West MP to back up the claims made in the 11 grounds for Gachagua’s impeachment.

Mutuse stuttered under duress, struggling to back up claims such as Gachagua’s ownership of the Vipingo Beach Resort, a key asset in the impeachment case.

Mutuse’s inability to firmly defend his assertions sparked significant criticism on social media, with many Kenyans criticizing his performance with memes and derogatory remarks.

Following his lackluster performance at the Senate impeachment trial, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga demanded that the Kibwezi West MP be stripped of both his law degree and Kenya School of Law (KSL) diploma.

Goliath Wa Bungoma

Isaac Wekesa, alias Goliath wa Bungoma, rose to prominence shortly after his lookalike Bradley Marongo basked in the spotlight following Gen Z protests.

Wekesa was astonished to learn that another person who looked exactly like him existed.

Bradley Marongo’s arrival in Nairobi caused an internet sensation, prompting the discovery.

When Wekesa, a Bungoma County native, saw Marongo, he instantly asked his mother about the apparent likeness.

Unsatisfied with his family’s reactions, the Bungoma Goliath travelled to Nairobi to meet Marongo in person.

In an interview, the Bungoma Goliath stated that he was willing to undergo a DNA test to determine kinship.

Goliath Wa Bungoma is slightly taller than Bradley Marongo, who stands at 8.2 feet.

While Wekesa is from Bungoma County, Marongo is from Majengo in Vihiga County.

Marongo rose to fame during the recent Gen Z protests across the country, garnering the title of tallest Gen Z, which was later challenged by the appearance of Goliath Wa Bungoma.
