HMPV: Covid-Like Disease Ravaging China – Here Is What We Know

China is seeing an increase in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections five years after the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to reports and internet forums, there has been widespread transmission, with some stating hospitals and crematoria are at capacity.

Videos circulating online show overcrowded hospitals, and users report the simultaneous spread of influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid 19.

Some studies have linked the rise in HMPV to an increase in mortality, notably among those aged 40 to 80.

“China is facing a surge in multiple viruses, including Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums. Children’s hospitals are particularly strained by rising pneumonia and ‘white lung’ cases,” a social media post stated.

According to the Chinese CDC, there is an upsurge in HMPV-positive cases among children under the age of 14.

Some users also claimed that “multiple viruses” such as influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19 were spreading rapidly.

One person even claimed China has proclaimed a state. However, these allegations are unfounded, as there is no tangible proof to back them up.

Neither Chinese health officials nor the World Health Organization (WHO) have declared an epidemic or a state of emergency.

What is the HMPV Virus?

HMPV was discovered in 2001 and belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also contains RSV. According to studies, it has been present in humans for over 60 years over the globe.

The virus causes respiratory sickness in people of all ages, but it mainly affects young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

HMPV Symptoms

Symptoms include a cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.

Transmission happens when respiratory droplets come into touch with contaminated things. The incubation phase lasts three to five days.

Prevention

Wearing masks, washing your hands frequently, and increasing your immunity are all preventative methods. Experts advise avoiding using antivirals to treat HMPV.

A Shanghai respiratory expert recommended against using antiviral medications for HMPV because there is no vaccine and the symptoms are comparable to a cold.

In 2023, HMPV was discovered in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Australia, Canada, the United States, and China.

WHO’s Statement On China Virus Outbreak

Separately, the WHO has continued to push China to be open about the origins of COVID-19.

The WHO stated on Monday: “We continue to call on China to share data and access so we can understand the origins of COVID-19. This is a moral and scientific imperative.”

The organization added: “Without transparency, sharing, and cooperation among countries, the world cannot adequately prevent and prepare for future epidemics and pandemics.”
