Nairobi County Goes After Noisy Matatus, Touts To Restore Order In CBD

The county government has proposed new key measures that will be implemented as part of a bigger attempt to restore order in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

To keep the CBD free of noise pollution, the county has deployed askaris to arrest matatu touts and kamageras who shout and cause disruptions while attempting to persuade customers to board their vehicles.

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, has issued a stern warning to touts and kamageras, urging them to stop disrupting the city.

“We have strategically stationed our county askaris so that they can arrest those making noise in town, including matatu touts and kamageras shouting along the streets,” Mosiria explained.

Shop owners who play loud music with DJs on their premises have also been targeted.

According to Mosiria, this noise disrupts routine city activity and disturbs surrounding companies and schools in the central business district.

The county is also committed to maintaining the CBD clean. Shop owners who fail to wash their premises will be arrested, according to Mosiria.

“We gave all shop owners a notice: make sure you sweep a 10-metre radius. If not, you will be arrested and taken to court to explain why you are not following the county’s directives,” he stated.

Hotel owners in the city who fail to monitor and ensure proper garbage disposal and management have also received warnings. They have been asked to guarantee that garbage is managed responsibly.

Mosiria stated that the county is implementing new waste management systems to track where waste is disposed of and by whom.

According to the Chief Environment Officer, hotel owners in Nairobi contribute greatly to the city’s squalor by failing to properly dispose of their waste.

This, in the long run, falls to street families, who frequently dump it along roadsides.

Nairobi County has reaffirmed that everyone has the right to a clean and healthy environment and must take responsibility for maintaining and improving its quality.

Mosiria also chastised Nairobi citizens for blaming the county administration for the city’s filth, claiming that they were not following the essential policies to preserve cleanliness.
