NTSA Targets Commercial Vehicles With 8 Laws In New Bill

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released a draft of new laws governing all commercial vehicles in the country.

On Monday, January 27, the authority issued a statement outlining the eight ideas in the draft titled Draft National Transport and Safety Authority (Operation of Commercial Service Vehicles) Regulations, 2025.

“Update: As an obligation on the part of the Commercial Service Vehicle Operators, the Draft National Transport and Safety Authority (Operation of Commercial Service Vehicles) Regulations, 2025, propose,” the statement read, followed by the eight new proposals.

To begin, a business vehicle must have at least third-party insurance coverage and a valid vehicle inspection certificate.

The cars should also have a speed limiter that meets the applicable Kenyan requirements set by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

A vehicular telematic system that meets the specifications should also be fitted.

In addition, they should include retro-reflective contour marks that are at least two inches wide.

Where applicable, commercial vehicles should be equipped with underride protection systems at the rear and sides.

The following two requirements mandate the presence of a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit inside the cars in an easily accessible location.

The fire extinguisher should be kept in fine working order, and the first-aid kit should be adequate for any conceivable emergency.

A commercial service vehicle is any motor vehicle used to deliver goods and, on occasion, paying passengers. These include trucks, buses, and vans.

These vehicles are critical in several industries, including construction, logistics, and public transportation.
