Senate Suspends Gloria Orwoba For 3 Months Despite Issuing Apology

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has urged her Senate colleagues to forgive her for the actions that resulted in her suspension.

Orwoba stated that she had learned from the incident and would behave better when she returned.

She said this while she was leaving the Senate after Deputy Speaker Murungi Kathuri released a communication on the implementation of the Senate’s resolution regarding the Committee of Powers and Privileges’ report on her conduct.

“I offer my apologies to the Members of this House and the members of staff whom I might have offended while pursuing my oversight duties. Please take this as my sincere apology,” Orwoba stated.

“As you can see, I have learned how to present and represent people better. I take responsibility for my actions and hope you can forgive me,” she added.

Following the High Court’s decision to support the Senate in suspending the member, Orwoba has been suspended for 79 calendar days, until May 1, 2025.

“Taking note by the judgment, Senator Gloria Orwoba shall now forthwith commence her suspension,” the Deputy Speaker revealed.

“The 79 calendar days that were to be acclaimed in 2023 will therefore run from Wednesday, 12 February 2025 to Thursday, 1 May 2025.”

This decision now means that Orwoba will abstain from any Parliamentary activities.

By Senate resolution dated September 20, 2023, Orwoba was suspended from the House for the balance of the 13th Parliament’s second session.

However, Orwoba obtained a court order that stayed the House’s resolution.

As a result of the High Court’s stay of suspension, Orwoba did not serve any of her suspension, as determined by the Senate.

In September 2023, the Committee on Powers and Privileges recommended her suspension in response to allegations that a Senate clerk abused her.

However, Orwoba went to court and got an order preventing the House from enforcing its decision.

High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi agreed with the Senate’s decision, stating that the senator was given the opportunity to defend herself before the Powers and Privileges Committee but turned it down.

Mugambi dismissed Orwoba’s petition, ruling out any violation of the senator’s entitlement to fair and administrative proceedings as required by law.
