US Embassy Responds To Ruto-Al Shabaab Meeting Reports

On Friday, February 14, the US Embassy highlighted a press release about a claimed meeting between President William Ruto and the leadership of Al Shabaab as phony.

This follows unconfirmed accusations that Ruto met with Al Shabaab officials during one of his recent travels.

This was viewed as an unusual action, given the enormous damage and loss of life caused by the terrorist group in the country.

Since its beginnings in the late 2000s, Al Shabaab has carried out a number of terrorist acts in Kenya and the East African area, several of which were fatal.

In Kenya, Al Shabaab has carried out four noteworthy attacks, killing over 250 people and leaving many others crippled and scarred for life.

Most notably, the 2013 Westgate Mall incident killed 67 people and shook the nation to its core.

During the attack, terrorist militias besieged the mall for nearly three days.

Other attacks were the Dusit D2 Hotel attack in 2019, which killed 14, the Lamu/Mpeketoni attacks in 2014, which killed 48, and the 2015 Garissa University attack, which killed 148 people.

This was in addition to the catastrophic 1998 US Embassy bombing in Nairobi by Al-Qaeda, which killed many people.

In the now-flagged letter, the US Embassy expressed its knowledge of the suspected meeting with Al-Shabaab, a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

The embassy described it as a “blatant disregard for the shared values of peace, security, and the rule of law.”

“The United States Government has learned with grave concern and profound disappointment of reports that President William Ruto of Kenya has secretly engaged in discussions with the leadership of Al-Shabaab, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization responsible for the deaths of countless innocent civilians, including American citizens,” the now-flagged statement read.

In the release, the US condemned any cooperation with the terrorist organization, claiming that it constituted a threat to global peace and security and hampered international efforts to combat terrorism.

The United States has been a vital player in the fight against Al Shabaab, giving significant resources to combat the terrorist organization.

It has contributed financing in the billions of dollars to train and equip regional peacekeeping forces, as well as Somali security forces.

It has also conducted regular air strikes on bases thought to be Al-Shabaab camps in an effort to eliminate the group.

In 2017, US President Donald Trump authorized the first regular US force deployment to the country since 1994, although they were later ordered to leave.

In light of all of this, the now-flagged release expressed questions about Kenya’s commitment to regional security and adherence to international counterterrorism norms, emphasizing its earlier support for Kenya in the fight against terrorism.

The message warned of terrible consequences if any involvement with the terrorist group continued for an extended period.

This was especially notable given Trump’s strong posture against African countries after ascending to power for the second time.

The flagged statement added: “Any cooperation with Al-Shabaab, directly or indirectly, is unacceptable and will have severe consequences for the bilateral relationship between our two nations.”
