PROTESTS: Bungoma Residents Take To The Streets Over Plot To Impeach Wetangula

On Tuesday, Bungoma people gathered in the streets to protest the purported conspiracy to impeach National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.

Residents marched through the streets of Bungoma Town, holding large placards and twigs, accusing opposition Members of Parliament of orchestrating Wetangula’s impeachment scheme.

The demonstrators, who were largely boda boda riders, also criticized President William Ruto for failing to defend Wetangula from the approaching axe despite gaining overwhelming regional support in 2022.

During the peaceful demonstrations, people reminded President Ruto of a promise he made in 2022 when he visited the county, promising to assist Wetangula in obtaining his present National Assembly position.

According to the people, the conspiracy to impeach Wetangula was politically motivated, with protestors urging opposition MPs to respect the speaker’s position.

The rallies, which lasted several hours, caused a traffic jam along the Bungoma – Kisumu Highway, forcing cars to seek alternate routes.

The demonstrations came just a week after Starehe MP Amos Mwango vowed to launch a censure petition against Speaker Wetangula if he refused to retire.

Mwango, speaking on February 11, accused Wetangula of incompetence.

He said that the Speaker’s irresponsible judgments were to blame for major political criticism of the National Assembly, notably the June and July revolts against the Finance Bill last year.

The legislator defended his position by citing a recent High Court verdict that declared Wetangula’s function as both speaker and Ford-Kenya party leader unlawful.

“He has done many wrongs and showed a character of incompetence. For the sake of this nation, I thought it would be honourable for him to retire peacefully,” MP Mwango claimed.

MP Mwango’s campaign for Wetangula’s expulsion came after a three-judge bench ruled Wetangula guilty of violating the constitution.

This comes after Wetangula declared President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza as the majority coalition in parliament.

The court decided that Speaker Wetangula had no valid cause for assigning Kenya Kwanza the dominant role, overturning the speaker’s decision and declaring Azimio la Umoja as the majority coalition.
