Education CS Voids UoN Council Chair’s Nomination After UASU Strike Notice
Professor Amukowa Anangwe’s nomination as chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council has been revoked by the Ministry of Education.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, February 21, 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba terminated Prof Amukowa’s position as UoN Council chair, effective immediately.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012 as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education revokes the appointment of – Amukowa Anangwe (Prof.) as the Chairperson of the Council of the University of Nairobi, with effect from the 21st February, 2025,” read the notice.
CS Ogamba’s order comes days after the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) vowed to hold protests demanding Prof Anangwe’s resignation for alleged meddling and sabotage of the university’s operations.

On Wednesday, UASU members issued a seven-day ultimatum requesting the ouster of Council Chair Anangwe due to alleged meddling and sabotage of the university’s activities.
UASU, led by the Chairperson of the UoN chapter, Dr Richard Bosire, issued a 7-day ultimatum, requesting that the Education CS immediately dismiss the Council.
Bosire contended that it is impeding operations and preventing the acting Vice-Chancellor from carrying out her obligations.
“We call upon CS Migos Ogamba to take quick action because we are not ready to watch and see the university die before our eyes,” warned Bosire.
According to Bosire, prominent government officials have devised a plan to confiscate the university’s land, which includes graduate residences.
The property in question is located opposite the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and near Hotel Boulevard on James Gichuru Road.
The Council later responded to the Union officials’ strike threats, accusing UASU of having hidden intentions for their quest.
The institution’s administrators claimed that UASU’s demand for Amukowa’s removal was solely designed to protect some corrupt union members and impede the institution’s continuing change.
It described the planned walkout as a “diversionary tactic” designed to paralyze the institution and undermine current investigations into some union executives.

“It is concerning that in the face of these challenges, some disgruntled elements that have benefitted illegally from the current status quo are resisting the necessary reforms in order to perpetuate malpractice, corruption and abuse of office,” read the statement by the Director of Corporate Affairs John Orindi.
“We urge the university staff to refrain from perpetuating strikes to disrupt the university’s progress.”
It also refuted the claims made against Anangwe, calling them ‘baseless’ and outlining the various duties of its organs.
This comprises the Council, the Chancellor, and the Vice-Chancellor, with the added emphasis that any decisions made by the institution pass through all legal processes.
