JKIA: Kenya Power Announces An 8-Hour Blackout With Expected Airport Activity Disruption
Sections of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) will be blacked out on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., barely hours after a fire broke out.
According to a statement from Kenya Power dated February 22, power would be turned off in the aforementioned regions for repair.
“Please receive planned power maintenance for tomorrow,” the statement read.

The first area mentioned in the warning is the Barabara Plaza Road within the JKIA airport. This will have an impact on customers at KeNHA Barabara Plaza, HCD, KCAA, and other nearby locations.
The blackout will affect various enterprises at the airport, including Mitchell Cotts Group, Swissport Kenya Airflo, Crowne Plaza, Vegro, and DB Shenker.
Air Connection, Kunhe+Nagel, Four Point Hotel, Airport Trade Centre, Global Freights Logistics, KAA, Siginon Aviation, Acceller, Freight Complex, and nearby clients would all be impacted.
The blackout notice comes just one day after JKIA. On Friday night, a wildfire broke out inside the international airport, devouring the meadows bordering the main runway.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the event, reporting that the fire had engulfed the area at 75 Airport North Road.

Although worrying, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) eventually confirmed that no vital infrastructure had been damaged in the fire.
According to KAA, critical airport activities such as aircraft takeoff and landing were unaffected, and the airport continued to operate normally.
“All airport activities including flight schedules, passenger processing, cargo handling remain fully operational and unaffected,” the statement read.
The source of the fire has yet to be determined, but it was confined after hours of fighting.
