HAITI: Second Kenyan Police Officer Killed By Gangs 148KM From Port-Au-Prince

Another Kenyan police officer from the Multinational Security Support (MSS) operation in Haiti was killed on Tuesday, March 25, after a shootout with gang members in the Lower Artibonite district.

The incident occurred about 92 miles north of Port-au-Prince.

The officer’s identity has not been revealed.  His family was informed of the situation.

The event occurred when three armored vehicles became immobilized in a ditch, which was alleged to have been dug purposefully by gangs.

As recovery attempts were underway, gang members launched an attack that resulted in the officer being shot.

The gangs grabbed control of the officer’s body, and specialised teams were dispatched to retrieve it.

This is the second fatality among Kenyan officers in Haiti.

Previously, on February 23, Police Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was shot and killed during an anti-gang operation in the Artibonite region.

The MSS operation, commanded by Kenyan commandos, is intended to assist Haitian authorities in combatting growing gang violence.

The MSS in Haiti reported Wednesday that the officer went missing on Tuesday, March 2, around 5 p.m.

According to the statement, the incident occurred when the team’s vehicle became stuck in a ditch while patrolling in Port-au-Prince’s Pont-Sonde Area.

“As a result of the incident, one MSS Kenyan contingent officer remains unaccounted for,” a statement said.

“Specialized teams have been deployed to conduct a search and determine his whereabouts.”

According to the statement, an armored truck belonging to the Haitian National Police (HNP) became stranded in a trench that gangs are suspected of digging on purpose.
