‘Echoes Of War Must Be Heard!’ – Kalonzo Tells Ruto After Teargassing of Butere Girls Students

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has slammed President William Ruto’s administration for reportedly permitting tear gassing of Butere Girls High School students and preventing them from staging their controversial play, “Echoes of War”.

In a press statement issued Thursday morning, Kalonzo questioned the government’s purported plan to prevent the kids from performing their play at the National Drama Festival in Nakuru County.

While expressing his support for the students, the Azimio leader praised them for declining to perform in the face of police interference.

He went on to say that the youngsters’ bravery was a national wake-up call.

“How does this regime justify lobbing tear gas at young girls from Butere Girls who declined to stage their play ‘Echoes of War’ at the National Drama Festival?” Kalonzo questioned.

“I stand with Butere Girls and all students who joined the walkout in solidarity. Kenya must remain a country where even the echoes of war are heard and heeded.”

In his speech, Kalonzo also urged the relevant authorities, particularly the Ministries of Interior and Education, to act and prevent police intervention with drama festivals.

He also accused the police of purportedly arresting former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala, claiming that his incarceration reflected Kenyan officials’ fear of the truth.

According to the Wiper party chairman, Malala was simply arrested by police for exercising his constitutional rights, as protected by Article 33.

Kalonzo’s comments came just moments after police officers used tear gas canisters to disperse a throng protesting the plight of Butere Girls High School students.

The students in the throng were forced to scurry for safety, with videos of the situation circulating online showing them jumping into the bus.

The students arrived at the Lions Melvin Jones Academy School in Nakuru prepared to present a play written by Malala; however, they refused to perform, demanding Malala’s release.

On Wednesday night, the former UDA Secretary General was allegedly apprehended by police officials after attempting to meet with students preparing for their play ahead of today’s performance.
