Labour Ministry Under Fire Following Surge In Scam Jobs Abroad
Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has launched a stinging attack on the Labour Ministry, led by Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.
Senator Orwoba accused the docket of harboring individuals who allegedly exploited Kenyans seeking jobs overseas under the government’s labor export initiative.
On the Senate floor on April 16, Orwoba, a Kenya Kwanza-aligned legislator, expressed her fury at what she regarded as purposeful carelessness by the Ministry of Labour.
She maintains that the Ministry is hesitant to handle the widespread occurrences of job frauds targeting desperate Kenyans seeking employment abroad.
“The Kenya Kwanza government has really tried in terms of SDG 8 to create opportunities for our youth through a labour export programme. Our Labour CS has been out negotiating with other governments to secure decent jobs for our people,” Orwoba said.
The senator also accused rampant fraud within the ministry, including coordination between recruitment agents and high-ranking officials to scam naïve job candidates.
“It is so unfortunate to see the holders of these offices including the Ministry of Labour butchering a well-intended program,” she lamented.
“The fact that we have had a series of very many fraudulent activities of agents who are colluding with some of the officers, including high officers at the Labour Ministry, to con Kenyans who are innocently trying to go out and seek a dignified living.”
According to Orwoba, naïve Kenyans have wasted thousands of shillings on these phony job syndicates, believing that the possibilities were sanctioned by the government.
She said that she directly steered some residents to what she thought was a legitimate process, only to discover that they had been misleading.
“I have had the unfortunate experience of actually gathering Kenyans and telling them that the government has provided a really good program to ensure that they get jobs out there, only to deliver them to the hands of conmen who are sitting in the Ministry of Labour,” she revealed.

The senator singled out Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries as significant destinations for disadvantaged Kenyans, particularly domestic workers, who continue to experience severe conditions.
She accused the government of failing to safeguard its citizens abroad and demanded an immediate review of the entire labour migration framework.
“It is a shame for the Minister of Labor to oversight all these activities where Kenyans are really suffering…,” she charged.
‘What is happening is we are not only sending Kenyans to conmen but we are harbouring thieves We are harbouring conmen in the name of cabinet secretaries and government officers.”
