‘We Will Monetise School Dramas!’ – Ruto Announces, Payment Through eCitizen

President William Ruto has announced plans to monetize school theatrical plays via the eCitizen platform to generate cash.

Speaking at the National Drama and Film Festival State Concert in Nakuru on Wednesday, the Head of State praised the numerous talents presented at the event and said that it was time to monetize the plays.

“I think it is time for us to have a greater reach and to even monetise further the content that is coming out of these great performances. This should be available on eCitizen so that more Kenyans can have access to watch and pay,” Ruto said.

Ruto underlined Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok’s thoughts that schools demonstrate a wealth of talent that might be converted into films and monetized through eCitizens.

“We are walking closely with the creative director in your office to ensure that we monetise all these talents coming out, we are working on a program to ensure that all these talents, all these films, all these dramas are linked to e-citizen so that they can be monetised,” Bitok said.

According to both leaders, the decision was intended to empower all parties involved in these school productions, allowing them to benefit from the abilities.

“Through this initiative, more money and revenue can go back to these creatives, and schools and everyone part of this endeavour,” Ruto continued.

The leaders were addressing at an occasion where top performers from the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival 2025’s grand finale presented their winning plays to President Ruto and other dignitaries.

The evening featured great performances by festival winners Moi High School Mbiruri, Kanyuambora High School, and Kangaru High School.

The festival featured plays, cultural dances, films, and new digital storytelling, showcasing Kenya’s diverse artistic ability.

Interestingly, the Butere Girls, whose ‘Echoes of War’ play drew national notice for its content and prompted authorities to prevent them from performing, were absent from the state occasion.

The President and Education PS made the call at a time when the eCitizen was embroiled in an ownership dispute.

The platform is facing intense scrutiny after revelations that private developers hold the power to shut down the system if their contract is terminated.
