Sifuna Speaks On Nairobi Flooding Deaths Hours After Sakaja Comments

Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna described the fatalities in various sections of Nairobi County as ‘unnecessary’.

During an interview on Spice FM on Thursday, April 24, Sifuna accused the county government, stating that it must take certain procedures to safeguard residents’ safety.

“My team has been in contact with families to support them because this is the most unnecessary death in Nairobi,” he said.

“We all know that the rains would eventually come, and the county government needs to do certain things to make sure that people are safe.”

His comments come only hours after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja blamed the floods on obsolete drainage infrastructure and a lack of funding in an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday night.

According to Sakaja, most drainage systems in the city were designed for light, seasonal rain rather than the severe, consistent rains that Nairobi is currently receiving.

“The sheer amount of rain that is coming down is higher than ever before, and a lot of our drains were designed for a smaller capacity or for seasonal rain in the city,” Sakaja said.

He also stated that the county had dispatched 3,800 young people known as the “Green Army” to collect waste and unclog drainage systems in order to assist in decreasing floods in the city.

According to Sifuna, more than six persons perished as a result of the severe rains and flooding in various regions of Nairobi.

“We are having this conversation today at a very difficult time for Nairobi. We have heard of the incident of death following the flooding that has happened in Nairobi,” Sifuna said.

“As of yesterday, we were counting upwards of six people who have lost their lives in various places in Nairobi.”

He promised to help the families of those killed in the recent flooding in various sections of Nairobi.

He claimed that his staff had already reached out to the impacted families to offer support and that the deaths were unnecessary.

Sifuna further stated that he had recently filed a petition with the Senate asking for compensation and the cooperation of communities near rivers.

“Our people have no problem with moving to safer grounds. It is not a decision people make deliberately to live in a dangerous place,” he explained.

“It is a decision they are pushed into because of their economic situation. You will find that the cheapest housing in Nairobi is also the most risky.”

“They have told me that they do not have a problem with moving. They just need to be involved, and the compensation that was promised, especially to those living along river corridors, has to be given,” he added.
