Cities, Towns SGR Will Pass After Ruto-China Deal
According to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, more urban districts and towns in Kenya would be connected to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as part of a new contract to expand the modern railway line to Uganda’s border.
According to the plan, the SGR, for which President William Ruto signed an agreement to extend funding, will pass via Nakuru and Eldoret before continuing to Baringo and Malaba in the first phase.
It will be referred to as 2B, with Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisumu, and Malaba as 2C.
Kindiki announced the facts during a Sunday evening worship at Kisii’s Marani Catholic Church.
“The railway that the President secured funds for its construction there will be in two phases, that is, 2B and 2C,” Kindiki revealed.
“SGR 2B will go through Nakuru, Baringo, Eldoret, and Malaba. The 2C will go through Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisumu, and Malaba.”
According to Kindiki, in addition to the SGR, the government plans to expand the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit-Malaba route.
Kenya has inked an agreement with the Chinese government to extend the key highway.

This followed detailed discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ruto during the latter’s four-day state visit to China.
Kindiki believes that the extension of the SGR and roadway will increase the economic potential of the mentioned places.
Furthermore, he stated that the government was committed to reducing the high rates of road fatalities that are typical in the country’s western region due to poor road conditions and irresponsible driving.
This comes after the government on Thursday agreed with China on the extension of the second phase of the Standard Gauge Railway from Nairobi to Naivasha and from Naivasha to Malaba.
“This cooperation cements Kenya’s role as a key Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and regional logistics partner, while integrating East Africa’s transportation network and enhancing intra-regional trade,” Hussein Mohamed, the State House Spokesperson, confirmed.

Meanwhile, Ruto’s agreement with China to dual the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit-Malaba highway came just a fortnight after Kenya cancelled a Ksh190 billion (€1.3 billion) contract with a French company hired to build the road.
Kenya’s decision to terminate the deal with the French firm came after the government decided to reassess the contract following concerns raised by Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials.
The issues caused KeNHA to send a termination notice, effectively ending the Public-Private Partnership.
The proposal might have resulted in increased government spending on highway construction.
