Another SACCO On The Spot Over Ksh2 Billion Embezzlement
Thousands of Afya Sacco members could have lost up to Ksh2 billion in the alleged theft.
The members, who are now seeking answers from Afya Sacco management, have given the organization seven days to react or they would take to the streets.
The threats come as members became increasingly frustrated, alleging that repeated attempts to obtain information on Sacco’s financial situation were greeted with evasion and silence from top executives.
Members have accused high management, including the chairman, top managers, and head accountants, of theft.
Furthermore, they have siphoned and embezzled members’ monies, which has escalated to unprecedented heights.
They have also accused the Cooperatives Ministry, led by CS Wycliffe Oparanya, of neglecting their appeal for intervention.
“Several attempts have been made to the Ministry of Cooperatives and the Sacco Society Regulatory Authority to address these vices, but no concrete action has been taken to stop the vice or restore sanity, and that is why we have resolved to this route,” the members say.
According to the members, the Sacco leadership has been irritating them with stories of chronically ill individuals being unable to withdraw their deposits.

Some people wishing to withdraw assets for personal reasons claim to have encountered unexpected delays and obstacles, notwithstanding the cooperative’s 60-day withdrawal policy.
“Some of our members are suffering from chronic illnesses and have tried to access this money with no success,” the members continued.
“Numerous members seeking to withdraw from the Sacco on personal grounds have faced delays and obstruction contrary to the 60-working-day policy.”
Afya Sacco members have accused the leadership of preventing salary withdrawals in the form of shares, despite obvious constitutional rights to do so.
They argue that this violates their constitutional right to withdraw from the cooperative.

According to them, despite having millions in savings, many retired and ailing members are unable to access needs or medical treatment, and dividends for 2024 have yet to be paid, in violation of both the Cooperatives Act and Sacco laws.
Afya Sacco, which services healthcare workers, has come under fire for alleged financial mismanagement, with members citing suspicious transactions, blocked audits, and governance issues.
The worries continue to put doubt on Saccos, months after the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives Ltd (KUSCCO) was involved in a similar predicament.
KUSCCO made news after a huge financial scandal revealed mismanagement, illegal transactions, and lost assets worth more than Ksh13.3 billion.
