Court Frees Rose Njeri On Ksh100K Bond After 4 Days In Custody

Rose Njeri, a software developer facing allegations of computer misuse and criminality, has been released on a Ksh100,000 personal bond pending the hearing of her case.

While releasing the activist, principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo scheduled the case for Friday, June 20.

Njeri was charged with unlawful interference with computer systems under Section 16 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act No. 5 of 2018.

Her arraignment followed a three-day imprisonment at Pangani Police Station, which sparked a huge controversy.

Njeri was arrested on Friday, May 30, following a tweet she sent on May 19 announcing the construction of a website to encourage public objections to the planned Finance Bill 2025.

“I wrote a simple programme that lets you reject the Finance Bill 2025 with just one click. Click below to send your objection,” her tweet stated.

Following her detention, outraged Kenyans spearheaded calls for her unconditional release.

Activists and politicians paid her a visit at the Pangani Police Station during the long Madaraka Day weekend.

On Saturday, May 31, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president, Faith Odhiambo, stated that the LSK team had visited Pangani Police Station and was able to see Njeri after a lengthy process.

On Sunday, chaos broke out outside the police station as activists, led by Boniface Mwangi and Hanifa Adan, decried being prevented from seeing Njeri, with the gate being locked to prevent their entry.

However, Presidential hopeful Okiya Omtatah managed to access Njeri and was even pictured talking to her.

Because Monday was a public holiday, her arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday, resulting in her spending nearly 72 hours in police custody without being arraigned, which is against the law.

More controversy erupted this morning when LSK boss Odhiambo stated that Njeri was moved from Pangani police station without prior notice from authorities.

Despite this, Njeri was later arraigned in court, with a battalion of famous legal practitioners led by former Chief Justice David Maraga defending her.

Other significant players included former Vice President and Senior Counsel Kalonzo Musyoka, Senior Counsel John Khaminwa, Senior Counsel Eugene Wamalwa, Dan Maanzo, former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Eric Theuri, Ndegwa Njiru, and delegates from the LSK.
