TSC Appoints Interim CEO As Nancy Macharia Begins Terminal Leave
Eveleen Mitei has been named Acting CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as the contest to succeed Nancy Macharia continues.
Macharia revealed his intention to appoint Mitei via an internal communication dated June 1, 2025.
Mitei is now the Deputy Head of the Human Resources Directorate of TSC, overseeing the HRM Division.
Macharia revealed in the email that she will go on terminal leave before retiring on June 30, when her 10-year term finishes.
“I am proceeding on Terminal Leave with effect from today, June 1, 2025, pending my retirement from the Teachers Service Commission on June 30, 2025, after serving the Commission in various capacities,” Macharia said.
She added, “In the meantime, note that the Commission has appointed Ms Eveleen Mitei to act as the Commission Secretary/CEO pending the appointment of my successor. I urge you to accord her the necessary support.”

Macharia has been CEO of TSC since June 2015, when she was originally appointed. She was reappointed in 2020 for a second five-year term.
However, the search for her replacement has stalled after the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Mombasa halted the hiring process.
The decision threw a wrench in the proceedings that began on May 6.
The petitioner contends that the process to replace Macharia is rigged, with constitutional violations and discriminatory criteria.
The TSC has publicly posted the job, urging qualified Kenyans to apply by May 27.
There are at least five experienced instructors being considered as Macharia’s potential successors.

Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, TSC’s current deputy CEO, is among the leading candidates.
Prof Charles Ong’ondo, who leads the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, is also regarded as a strong contender due to his experience managing the development of the Competency-Based Curriculum.
Dr. Julius Jwan, the former Basic Education Principal Secretary, has also been cited.
Other candidates being considered include Dr Lydia Nzomo, a seasoned administrator and former director of the TSC who is well-known for her advocacy of teachers’ rights and leadership in teacher management, and Dr. Simon Gicharu, the founder of Mount Kenya University.
